It was late December in 1891 that the PE teacher in Springfield decided to change the history of sport. He had a plan to motivated his students to work out despite weather condition that is rain. He devised a team game which can be used indoors.
The rules were very simple and written down by the same PE teacher.
Simple rules
- there are two teams of five players who try to score by shooting a ball through a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground
- the ball can be advanced up the floor with the hands only, either by dribbling or passing to teammates
- the basketball court layout is rectangular in shape and is split in a half by a mid- court line
- 3 points are granted if the shot is taken beyond the 3-pt line, 2 points are awarded for a basket made from anywhere else on the court, and free throw is worth 1 point
